Pearls have been seen as the world’s most beautiful and magical gems for centuries. For thousands of years, women have adorned themselves with beautiful pearl jewelry. Celebrities such as Princess Diana, Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, and Sarah Jessica Parker have continued the love of pearls throughout the decades as they added them to their outfits for various occasions. Though times and trends are ever-changing, they never seem to go out of style.
HISTORY OF PEARLS:
It is said that the first pearl discovered was found while humans searched the seashore for food. Throughout history, the pearl has served as one of the most sought-after gems, with its warm inner glow and shimmering iridescence. Egyptians, Romans, and the Greeks all held the pearl in high esteem and treated them as though they held powers of life and love.
THE BIRTH OF A PEARL:
Pearls come to being in a miraculous way. Grown by live oysters below the surface of the sea, pearls are unlike any other gemstone and need no treatment or polishing to bring out their beauty. The process begins when a particle, or irritant, gets inside the oyster. The irritant is then trapped, and the oyster begins coating it with nacre- a defense mechanism. This is where the pearl gains its unique luster. After thousands upon thousands of layers of nacre coats the irritant, a pearl begins to form. Most pearls take typically two to four years to fully develop.
HOW TO STYLE PEARLS:
Whether you are heading to the office or out on the town, there are many ways to style your pearls. Style a single-stranded white pearl necklace under a crew neck blouse and a blazer as you head out to a meeting. Heading out to run errands? Throw on a pair of sneakers and a two-strand pearl necklace to complete a dressed-down look. For a more formal event accessorize even more with a multi-strand necklace and maybe even a pearl bracelet and pearl-studded earrings.
