How to Get Your Partner’s Ring Size in Secret

You finally decided to get down on one knee and POP THE QUESTION! But there’s just one catch, you don’t know your partner’s ring size. The simple solution would be to ask, but if you want your proposal to remain a surprise at all, and not leave your partner suspicious, you will need to be more subtle. To help you play detective, we’ve come up with a few sneaky ways to get your partner’s ring size secretly.

Ask her friends

A great way to find out is to ask a trusted source. One of her friends or a sibling is always a good option. Of course, you need to also make sure they can keep the secret. Having them ask will keep the attention off of you and their suspicions low. If they don’t know, you can have the friend to take your partner engagement ring shopping and nonchalantly get them sized. At Isbell Jewelers, we can professionally size someone’s ring finger for an exact measurement. This way, you know for sure that you are getting the correct size, which could save you time down the road.

Borrow a ring for size

Another option is to subtly snag one of their rings they don’t wear often and borrow it for the day. You’ll have to be extra careful with this choice, as it can easily go wrong. Rings aren’t always worn on the ring finger, so you could end up purchasing the wrong size if you are not sure. You could also run into trouble if they notice the ring you borrowed was missing! Especially if it is a ring that holds sentimental value.

If that is the case and you don’t want to take the ring with you, try tracing it on a piece of paper. You will want to be sure to trace both the inside and outside of the ring, then take that with you to a jeweler. From that, they can typically approximate the ring size needed!

Sneak the question into a conversation

Your partner may or may not pick up on this tactic, but it is definitely worth trying. If you play your cards right, there are plenty of ways to casually pose the question in conversation. One idea would be to mention buying a ring for a family member, like a mother or sister. You can get her input and then measure her finger to “compare for size.”Who knows, you may even find out what style ring she likes doing it this way! However you go about it, make sure to be creative and casual so you don’t draw much attention.

Just ask

If you’d rather not go about this the hard way, you can always be straightforward and just ask! If you and your partner have been together for a while, there’s a good chance you have both already discussed engagement and ring shopping. Besides, even if she knows you are buying a ring, she doesn’t have to know when you’re proposing!

The most important thing is that they say yes, and we have plenty of beautiful rings here to help make that happen!
